Yes — but not all of it. Most officers skim the first paragraph, then jump to the last. If the first paragraph is generic ChatGPT fluff, they may not read the rest at all.
What works: Open with a specific moment. Not "I have always been passionate about medicine" but "I was 14 when I watched my grandmother's doctor misdiagnose her chest pain as indigestion. I started reading about cardiac symptoms that night."
What does not work: Copy-pasting the same letter to five universities and only changing the university name. Officers can spot this in ten seconds. If you are applying to Semmelweis and ELTE, write two different letters. Semmelweis cares about clinical exposure. ELTE cares about research methodology. Address that difference.
They look for completion confidence — evidence that you will actually finish the degree and not drop out in year two. Dropouts waste their statistics.
Signals that you will finish:
You have already lived abroad or away from family (proves you can handle isolation).
Your motivation letter connects the degree to a specific job or plan back home (proves you are not just escaping your country).
You have backup funding beyond the scholarship (proves a financial crisis will not force you home).
Signals that you will drop out:
Your letter says you are "exploring options" or "finding yourself."
You have no clear answer to "What will you do with this degree?"
Your grades trend downward (a bad final year screams burnout).
Uploading a blurry scan. If your diploma scan looks like a photo of a photo taken at midnight, the officer assumes you do not care. Use a scanning app (CamScanner) and export as PDF.
Lying about English proficiency. Most majors require a minimum of IELTS 5.5 or B2 language proficiency. If you claim IELTS 6.5 but your motivation letter has grammar errors a 12-year-old would not make, the officer assumes fraud. If your English is weak, you will not pass the admission interview. In a best case scenario, you will be accepted into a preparatory program. Have ChatGPT tidy up your grammar, but don't ask it write your motivation letter for you.
Applying to a major with no relevant background. For example, some students apply to medicine because their parents want it, even though their high school transcript is all humanities. The officer sees this and rejects you instantly. Medicine requires Biology and Chemistry. No exceptions.
Missing the "why Hungary" question. Every officer asks this internally. If your letter does not answer it — explicitly, in one sentence — they will reject you for someone who did. Cost is a valid answer. Say it.
You can do this yourself. The application portals are in English. The document checklists are published online. The only reason to use an agent is if you do not trust your own English or if your home country has complex document legalisation that you genuinely cannot navigate.
Red flags for agents:
They charge more than €1000 for "application assistance."
They promise guaranteed admission (universities do not guarantee anything to agents).
They may withold or add extra informatoin to your application material without your knowledge.
They refuse to give you direct access to your university portal login.
What a good agent does: Checks your documents for completeness, and reminds you of deadlines. That is worth €300–€500. Anything more is a rip-off.
Yes — depending on the programme.
Medicine / Dentistry: No. These are competitive. You need top 20 % grades and a strong entrance exam.
Engineering: Maybe. Maths matters more than your overall GPA. If you failed History but aced Calculus, highlight that.
Business / Humanities: Yes, usually. These programmes often have capacity. A solid motivation letter can compensate for a B-average.
Art / Design: Your portfolio matters more than grades. A stunning portfolio with average grades beats a perfect transcript with no portfolio.
Sport Sceince: There are prerquisits such as being a competitive athlete, or strong math and anatomy/biology grades.
Strategy for average grades: Do not hide them. Address them directly in your letter: "My grades in year two dropped because I was working 20 hours a week to support my family after my father's illness. My grades recovered in year three when the situation stabilised." Admissions officers are human. They respect honesty more than perfection.
You do not need to be extraordinary. You need to be specific.
Bad: "I want to help people." (5,000 other applicants wrote this.)
Good: "I want to design prosthetic limbs for children in rural Kenya, where I grew up. Budapest's XYZ University biomedical engineering programme has a prosthetics lab that partners with East African hospitals." (One applicant wrote this. They got in.)
Three ways to be specific:
Name a professor whose research you have actually read.
Name a company in your home country where you want to work — and explain how this degree gets you there.
Name a problem in your community that this degree helps solve.
If you cannot do any of these three, you are not ready to apply. Take a week and figure it out.
Apply early. Perfect is the enemy of submitted.
Here is why:
Self-funded spots fill on a rolling basis. The earlier you apply, the fewer competitors you face.
If your documents are missing something, the admissions office will email you and ask for it. This gives you time to fix it.
If you wait until June, the officer is reviewing 200 applications per week. They spend 30 seconds on yours. In February, they spend 3 minutes.
The only exception: If your English test is scheduled for next month, wait for the result. Do not apply without it unless the university explicitly assesses your English during the admission process or allows conditional admission.
Do not guess what the university wants. We check your documents for mistakes and help you practice for your English admission interview. We make sure you are ready.
What is included:
Document Check: We read your CV, transcripts, and motivation letter. We check for mistakes and make sure your story matches what Hungarian universities want to see.
Red Flag Report: We send you a simple, clear list of weak points in your application and exactly how to fix them before you apply.
Free Interview Guide: You get our simple guide: "10 Common Interview Questions and How to Answer Them in Simple English."
Live Mock Interview (15 minutes): We do a practice interview with you on Zoom. We will ask you real questions. Afterward, we give you clear advice on how to speak better, fix your mistakes, and feel confident.
Who is this for?
Students who have their documents ready, but want a professional check before applying to Stipendium Hungaricum or a Hungarian university.
